Priyanka’s Justification On The Missing Manipuri Accent In Mary Kom

Using prosthetic make up was looking too gimmicky thought Priyanka Chopra while working on Mary Kom. Though they have tried it all to perfect the look of Olympic Champion, Manipuri Boxer Mary Kom, the very fact that the film was being made in Hindi was the reason to converse in Hindi.
Talking about the research point for this film, Priyanka in an interview  explained why she did not want to sound like Mary Kom. She clarifies, “There was a deliberate attempt to not sound like Mary Kom. No one would understand the film if I had to sound like her. Mary’s Hindi is tooti phooti. We didn’t want to imitate her. We are making a Hindi film and it was preferable that the reach of this film is very big. In this film, I am speaking a lot more Hindi than Mary does in real life. We wanted everyone to see it because it is a Hindi film. We are not making a Manipuri film here.”
Priyanka Chopra doesn’t sound like Mary Kom, or doesn’t look like Mary Kom. That is probably the biggest criticism leveled against the film. It has a synthetic look and doesn’t seem authentic shrieked critics.
Priyanka justified the film’s stand. She continued, “We knew my face would never look like hers. Quite early in the process of making the film we took a decision that VFX, prosthetic look, make up nothing will make me look like Mary. Sanjay Sir was very clear that this film will be about the spirit of Mary Kom. It was a very beautiful story to be told and taking up a gimmicky path is not needed for this film. When he saw the film after it was made, he told me that I forget you don’t look like her. The fighting spirit of this woman is so evident in the scenes that we have written, in the way the film is. The film is Mary’s zabaani. Half the scenes she has told us exactly how she experienced them.”
Directed by Omung Kumar, Mary Kom released on 5th September.
