Kick in
its opening day made 26 crores plus of business. Given that
the film released on a non festive, non holiday spell, it is a record of sorts
that the film made such a phenomenal beginning. Such is the star power of the
phenomenon called Salman Khan. Given the underwhelming performance of Jai Ho, Kick is
quite a crucial film for his career. It comes at a juncture where he did not
have a release for a long time and when a film of his released, his fans
weren’t too pleased with it.
This film, contrarily, in the words of every critic was a full
blown Salman show and given that the ensemble supporting cast was so powerful,
one would naturally assume that this one might be record shatterer at the box
office. Kick, undoubtedly, will put up an unbelievable
cumulative number by the end of this week itself, but the film will find it
hard to supersede Dhoom 3‘s
record of highest weekend collection ever and 100 crores in 3 days’ record.
Dhoom 3 benefited massively from being a franchise film and kept
well with the legacy of delivering well at the box office. The film released in
multiple languages which was another added advantage for the film and hence it
consistently earned in higher ranges at the domestic box office, accumulating
the income from vernacular shows. Also the film released at a time when it was
a festive season in general. Schools and colleges were shut by the 20th
December when the film released. Since convent education in most parts of India
is widely popular, December holidays in most parts of the country start early. Dhoom
3‘s strategic release turned out to be very advantageous for the film.
Even Chennai Express from
last year had a drift. The film’s preview shows earned well given it was a Shah Rukh Khan film.
It was a true to the word Eid release as the film released on the day of Eid. 33.1
crores of its first day can majorly be attributed to that. Adding the
paid previews on Thursday, Chennai Express managed the 100
crores in over three days primarily because Eid fell that weekend. The film was
watched as a part of the festive celebration.
In Kick’s case, Eid is still 2 days away and the
weekend isn’t enjoying the benefits of it. Kick released on an
ordinary Friday. Like a friend stated, Bhai’s film is a festival by itself.
Indeed the first day numbers speak the same story. But to amass a 100 crores by
Sunday, the film must earn 37 crores consistently over two
days, which might be a difficult feat but not an impossible one. It is a sleek
Salman show like his highest earner Ek Tha Tiger after
a long time and fans won’t miss this for anything in the world.
Sunday numbers are always higher than Saturday for big budget
films and hence this Sunday will be detrimental to the fate of the film. It
will be too pessimistic and naive to presume that Kick won’t
attain 100 crores over the weekend. But chances do suggest that the film might
miss the coveted record given the lack of vernacular shows to earn from,
however, given the film’s wide release in over 4000 screens it isn’t an
impossible idea.
Salman’s Eid releases have grown tremendously over the years and
the growth rate is quite something to gape at but whether this time Kick will
manage to smash Dhoom 3′s record is something that only weekend collections will decide.
Till then, let’s give Salman a chance to surprise us.
